This new-build house, on a site just outside Venice, is designed to strike a balance between contemporary domestic needs, sustainability requirements and the local vernacular architecture. The house will be constructed to 'Passivhaus' standards for the envelope fabric in order to reduce winter heating. To avoid overheating in the summer, and provide interstitial spaces between outside and inside, an external larch timber frame of shading and terraces wraps around the building. Combined with photovoltaic panels, a mechanical heat recovery unit and an inter-seasonal heat transfer (also used as a swimming pool) the house should have extremely low energy demands.
