New Orleans Neighbourhood Community Centre and Hurricane Shelter
Project location: New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Client: Project New Orleans, African-American Museum, New Orleans, Louisiana, USA
Timescale: 2006
The aim of this project is to reclaim the unused ground in central New Orleans beneath the I-10 elevated Interstate. Elements of the scheme combine to provide an emergency hurricane facility beneath the safety of the raised concrete deck when required. Through noise and fume mitigation of the highway and the addition of facilities for the improvement of New Orleans, the project seeks to repair the urban scar created by the Interstate cutting through the city.
As well as being exhibited in New Orleans, the site model for this project was also exhibited at the Royal Academy Summer Show in 2006.
