Ipswich School New Music School
Project Location: Suffolk, UK
Client: Ipswich School
Size: 1,024m²
Contract value: £2,600,000
Structural, Services and Acoustic Engineer: Buro Happold
Project Status: Shortlisted Competition Entry
Timescale: September 2008
This design proposes a zinc-clad acoustically tuned recital hall, wrapped by a string of brick-clad music practice rooms, with a generous daylit internal 'street' in between. To help maintain acoustic separation, fresh air for the music rooms would be supplied through underground ducts, pre-heating or pre-cooling the air depending on the season. Exhaust air from these rooms would be expelled through the internal 'street', offering climate control in that area for free to drastically reduce the energy demands of the building, while providing a bright and comfortable environment for the musical community of the school. The recital hall is aligned on axis with the listed school spire, integrating this new state-of-the-art facility into the historical fabric of the campus.
