Dubai Waterfront Hotel

Project location:Dubai, UAE
Client: Speculative Project
Timescale: 2006

This proposal for a high-rise hotel tower in Dubai re-conceives the arrangement and construction of a skyscraper by observing the fundamental concepts of structure, circulation and environmental conditioning that are found in nature. The resulting building design comprises a series of modules, which have different functions according to their spatial arrangement. The structure of the lattice-like modules derives from natural wing structures; these provide circulation, ventilation and event spaces. More enclosed modules lie in between, with their construction premise derived from exoskeletons and shell structures. The internal configuration of these shells is adjusted to provide either hotel rooms or private event spaces. Unlike more conventional hotel layouts, there is no abrupt transition between discrete spaces. In fact, the smooth transformation between module variants produces a multifarious range of ‘alternative’ or unique spaces, able to accommodate the wide range of other functions in the hotel.
